What is a Sauna?

In its simplest form, a sauna is an insulated room fitted with a heat source (traditional rocks, electric, wood-fired stove, infrared) designed to allow its occupants to experience a dry or wet heat session.

It works on the principle of heating the body through direct body contact with hot air (dry sauna) or steam (steam sauna), or through infrared radiation (infrared sauna).

This induces sweat to help relax and detox the body, release tension in the muscles and support a variety of other wellbeing benefits as well.

Types of Sauna

FINNISH SAUNA

Also known as a dry sauna, a Finnish Sauna is the most traditional type. In a Finnish sauna, the temperature typically ranges between 70 to 100°C (158 to 212 °F) and the humidity is usually low, below 20%. Water is gently ladled onto a pile of heated stones, creating a soft steam that fills the room, increasing the humidity and intensifying the heat.

STEAM SAUNA

Also known as a Turkish sauna or Hammam, a steam sauna differs from the Finnish sauna in that the heat is generated by steam. The temperature in a steam sauna is usually lower, around 40-50°C, but the humidity can reach 100%.

INFRARED SAUNA

A relatively new type of sauna that uses infrared panels to heat the body without significantly heating the room – a dry-heat, low-temperature experience. The heat penetrates deeply into the skin, raising core body temperature and inducing a gentle, soothing sweat. A modern take on the traditional sauna, infrared saunas share many health benefits, but offer a different experience due to their unique heating method and lower operating temperatures.

SMOKE SAUNA

Also known as savusauna, a smoke sauna is a traditional Finnish type of sauna without a chimney. At the heart of the sauna is a wood burner with lots of stones. This is heated and when the room is warm enough, the fire is extinguished, and the smoke let out before it can be used.

SALT SAUNA

A salt sauna is a sauna environment that includes Himalayan salt blocks lining the walls with microscopic salt particles infused into the sauna air. The temperature in a salt sauna typically ranges between 70-80°C (158-176°F), creating a hot environment that encourages intense perspiration, which is then combined with the healing benefits of salt.

What are the benefits of a Sauna?

Using a sauna has several potential health benefits as a result of the intense sweating and increased body temperature, including improved circulation, boosting the immune system, aiding in detoxification, better skin health, reducing stress and promoting relaxation and overall wellbeing.

Where a sauna has salt blocks or salt walls, the salt acts as a natural anti-bacterial and its cleansing power makes it extremely beneficial for those suffering from asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, colds, flus, allergies, eczema, and other skin conditions.

The types of wood we use in our saunas

Sauna seats and panelling made from Canadian Spruce

Canadian Spruce

Resin free, hypoallergenic and durable to temperature variations and humidity, the natural beauty and softness of this wood produces a classic, stylish design typical of a traditional sauna, immediately conjuring up a sense of calm, relaxation and wellness.

Our Canadian Spruce Saunas includes:

  • Canadian Spruce walls and ceiling
  • Obeche benches with radius fronts
  • Infill panels between the benches
  • LED lights with a range of colours to choose from
  • Hidden or wall-mounted heaters
  • Standard bronze tinted glass door

Aspen

Generally, softwood is used in the construction of saunas. However, Aspen, which is classified as a hardwood, makes an ideal material for a sauna.

Knot-free and resin-free, its characteristic light tone and smooth texture also give it an attractive look. Additionally, aspen is non-allergenic (almost no scent) so if you’re looking for an alternative to cedar, aspen is an excellent choice.

Our Aspen Saunas includes:

  • Aspen walls and ceiling
  • Aspen infill panels between the benches
  • LED lights with a range of colours to choose from
  • Hidden or wall-mounted heaters
  • Standard bronze tinted glass door

Red Cedar

With its outstanding durability, resistance to decay and attractive appearance, Red Cedar is an excellent choice of wood for a sauna. The timber is strong and both pitch and resin-free. It has a straight grain with very few knots and doesn’t shrink or warp when exposed to sauna heat. Moreover, it has excellent heat distribution properties – quick to heat and quick to cool down – providing a more comfortable and cooler surface to sit and lean on. Cedar is also well known for its healing properties and rich aromatic scent.

Our Red Cedar Saunas includes:

  • Red Cedar walls and ceiling
  • Red Cedar infill panels between the benches
  • LED lights with a range of colours to choose from
  • Hidden or wall-mounted heaters
  • Standard bronze tinted glass door
  • Horizontal and vertical boarding available

Obeche

We use knot-free Obeche timber for the benches and back rests.

Known for its stability and resistance to warping and decay it’s ideal for use in saunas.

Lightweight and durable, it also remains cool to the touch.

Our Himalayan Salt Saunas include:

  • Cedar or Aspen walls and ceiling

  • Infill panels between the benches

Sauna Design & Installation Recommendations

When designing, constructing and installing a sauna, there are some important factors to consider right from the start.

This includes careful consideration of layout, construction techniques, materials, insulation and heater choice.

However, the main safety considerations are sufficient ventilation, the opening direction of the door, and the thickness of any glass which may be used for a door and/or wall.

In most cases, you’ll require two points of air intake and two points of exhaust.

Glass doors, windows and walls can really enhance a sauna’s aesthetics and create a more spacious open feel. However, it’s important to note that a sauna with large glass surfaces requires more power to heat. So, it’s important to take this and the overall sauna size, as well as any limitations on the power supply into consideration when designing a sauna space.

In most cases, our doors are specified in glass, but they can be specified in wood and in wood and glass. The sauna door should always be specified as opening outwards for safety reasons.

We also offer the most suitable and effective fire suppression solutions to ensure your sauna is fire safe and insurance compliant.
